What is Muharram and why the new year of the Islamic religion begins with the month of Moharram, that is, the month of Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year, it is also called Hijri. The beginning of Hijri year is from this month, not only Muharram is one of the four holy months of Islam.
When is Muharram this time?
This time the English date of Muharram starts from August 20, which will be till August 30. Muharram, the festival of mourning, is celebrated in memory of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain on the 10th of this month. On this day, followers of Hazrat Imam Hussain celebrate themselves and mourn in memory of Imam Hussain.
Why is Muharram celebrated?
Shia Muslims worldwide celebrate Muharram in memory of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his followers. Imam Hussain was the grandson of Prophet Mohammad, who was considered a martyr in the war of Karbala. For why Muharram is celebrated, we have to go to that part of the date, when the Khilafat i.e. the Caliphate ruled in Islam.This caliph was the main leader of the Muslims of the whole world. Four Caliphs were elected after the Prophet's vow. People used to decide it among themselves.
When came the phase of extreme torture
Nearly 50 years later, there was a period of extreme atrocities in the Islamic world, far from Mecca, Syrian governor Yazid declared himself a Khalifa, his way of working was like the emperor, who was totally against Islam at that time,Imam Hussain then refused to consider Yajid as the Caliph. Angered by this, Yajid wrote a decree to his governor Walid son Atuva, 'You call Hussain and ask me to obey my order, if he does not agree, then behead him and be sent to me.'
The governor called Hussain to the Raj Bhavan and gave him the order of Yajid. On this, Husain said- 'I cannot obey Yajid's order of a viviparous, corrupt and disobedient God.' After this Imam Hussain reached Mecca Sharif,So that we can complete the Hajj. There Yajid sent his soldiers to kill Hussein as a passenger. Hussein came to know about this and Mecca is such a holy place where killing anyone is forbidden.
So to avoid the bloodshed, Hussein, instead of Hajj, did his small rituals and moved to Iraq along with his family. Hussain, along with his family, was in Karbala on 61st of the month of Muharram 61, advising to bring Yazid's army on the right path till the 9th, but he did not agree.After this, Hussain said- 'Give me one night's delay so that I can pray to Allah' This night is called 'Ashur ki Raat', Hussain's 72 followers were killed in battle on the throat.
Hussain was left alone, but then suddenly heard a noise in the camp, his six-month-old son Ali Asghar was suffering from thirst. Hussain took him in his hands and brought him to Maidan-e-Karbala. He asked Yajid's army to feed the son with water, but the army did not listen and the son succumbed to Hussain's hands.Later, even hungry-thirsty Hazrat Imam Hussain was killed. Hussein sacrificed his life for Islam and humanity. This is called Ashur, the day of mourning, the pilgrimage sites of Imam Hussein and Imam Abbas in Karbala, southwest of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.
How is Muharram celebrated?
Muharram is not a festival of joy but a month of weeds and tears. People of the Shia community remember the martyrdom of Hussain and his family by wearing black clothes on the day of 10 Muharram. Remembering the martyrdom of Hussain, a procession is taken out on the streets and mourning is celebrated. On the 9th and 10th of Muharram, Muslims keep fast and prayers are offered in mosques and houses.At the same time, people of Sunni community keep fast for 10 days in the month of Muharram. It is said that one Roja of Muharram is equal to 30 days.
